About the CIO

Picture of Ellen Borkowski

Ellen Borkowski joined Union College as the Chief Information Officer in November 2010. Ellen started her IT career as a programmer in an industry position prior to moving into the academic arena. She has spent over 20 years focusing on the applications of technology in support of teaching and learning. Ellen helped build the first Teaching Theater at the University of Maryland in the early 1990s, when Maryland received a grant from the AT&T Foundation. She was instrumental in setting up the support structure for this type of facility to enable faculty members to concentrate on their teaching without worrying about the technology while in this technology-rich environment. Her career at Maryland grew from being the Coordinator of Instructional Technology Support to being the Director of Academic Support. She also served as Interim User Support Director while at Maryland. She has also served as the Instructional Multimedia Coordinator at North Dakota State University, setting up its first University Multimedia Center to help faculty integrate multimedia into their teaching.

Ellen has published and presented numerous articles pertaining to instructional technology with a particular focus on supporting faculty in their use of technology. She is actively engaged with professional organizations at the national level with EDUCAUSE and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative. She has served as an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Distance Education Technologies. In addition to her IT experience, Ellen was a member of the Peer Consulting Network at Maryland, which is part of the Center for Leadership and Organizational Change, where she volunteered as a consultant in their process consulting assignments.

Ellen has earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer and Systems Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a Master of Education in Education Policy, Planning, and Administration with a specialization in Curriculum Theory and Development from the University of Maryland.  Ellen is also a 2009 EDUCAUSE Frye Leadership Institute Fellow.
